Good food is far more than fuel. For elderly residents in care, a thoughtfully prepared meal can spark a memory, brighten a morning and turn a quiet afternoon into a moment of real joy. At Ashberry Healthcare, dining sits at the very heart of daily life - and it's something our teams take enormous pride in getting right.
More Than a Menu
Across all our homes, the philosophy is simple: food should nourish both body and soul. That means every resident receives three freshly prepared, home-cooked meals each day, made on-site by our in-house kitchen teams using quality ingredients - local produce wherever possible.
But nutritional value alone isn't the whole picture. Mealtimes at Ashberry are designed to be sociable, relaxed and genuinely enjoyable. Whether residents choose to dine together in one of our elegant dining rooms, share a quiet breakfast looking out over the gardens, or take a meal in the comfort of their own room, the experience is always one of care and warmth.
From full English breakfasts to traditional Sunday roasts, from homemade cakes at afternoon tea to a cup of something hot and a biscuit mid-morning, food shapes the day in ways that bring comfort and familiarity. Residents are always welcome to request their favourite meals or a little treat.
Seasonal and Local
One of the things that sets Ashberry homes apart is our commitment to rotating seasonal menus. Rather than relying on a fixed, year-round menu, our kitchen teams update their meals with the seasons - leaning into hearty warming dishes in the winter months and lighter, fresher flavours as spring and summer arrive.
Here's a taste of what a summer day might look like:
Breakfast
Cereals, Fruits, Yoghurts, Toast • Cooked Breakfast On Request
Served With Tea, Coffee & Fruit Juices
Lunch
Slow Roasted Beef • Summer Vegetable Tart • Medley of Seasonal Vegetables • Crisp Roast Potatoes • Lemon Posset with Shortbread Biscuit
Dinner
Quiche Lorraine with New Potatoes • Banana Mousse
(Ice cream and fresh fruit are available with all meals. A selection of sandwiches and soup is available every day.)
This approach has real benefits beyond variety. Seasonal produce is fresher, more nutritious, and often sourced much closer to home. By working with local suppliers wherever possible, our chefs can bring high-quality ingredients to the table while supporting the communities our homes are part of.
The result is food that tastes like it's been made with intention - because it has. Dishes are home-cooked, beautifully presented and tailored to individual tastes. Menus are developed with residents' input, and our teams actively seek feedback to ensure what's on the plate reflects what residents want to eat.

Special Occasions
Food also plays a central role in marking life's occasions. Birthdays are celebrated with custom menus, and our themed coffee shop areas provide a relaxed, welcoming setting for residents to enjoy time with visiting friends and family. These aren't simply nice extras - they're part of how our homes create a sense of community and belonging.

Themed Dining
One of the most loved aspects of dining at Ashberry is our themed dining initiative. Each month, our homes explore a new theme - a country, a culture, a decade, a season - with menus and activities built around it. Some themes run for a full month; others are celebrated in a single special day that residents look forward to.
In February, for example, our homes came together to celebrate Chinese New Year, with kitchens preparing sweet-and-sour chicken, vegetable chow mein, egg fried rice, spring rolls, and homemade prawn toast. Residents made origami fortune cookies, coloured traditional illustrations, crafted paper dragons and received red envelopes - the day becoming a full celebration of culture and community.

Themed dining is remarkable for residents. It sparks conversation about a country someone visited decades ago, a dish that reminds them of a relative, a time period that shaped their life. For residents living with dementia in particular, familiar flavours and cultural references can be a powerful and gentle bridge to long-held memories. It's discovery and reminiscence at the same table. Our kitchen teams and activity coordinators work together to plan these events, ensuring the food, the atmosphere and the activities all tell the same story.
Investing in Quality
Providing consistently high-quality food across multiple homes requires not just great chefs, but great tools. Ashberry is investing in Rational Ovens across our care home kitchens - technology that helps our teams prepare food to the highest possible standard, every single time. It's an example of how we continue to look for ways to improve the experience for our residents, even behind the scenes.

Nutrition for Every Need
We understand that dietary needs in elderly care can be complex. Residents may be managing conditions that affect appetite, digestion, or their ability to eat certain textures. Our kitchen teams are experienced in preparing meals that meet a wide range of nutritional and dietary requirements - including vegetarian, vegan and allergen-specific diets.
For residents living with dysphagia - a condition affecting swallowing that is particularly common in older adults and those with dementia - we prepare pureed and soft versions of the same meals being served to other residents. Crucially, these aren't separate, lesser alternatives: they're carefully presented to be as appetising and dignified as any other dish on the table. Our approach to dysphagia care follows the International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI) framework, and our teams receive ongoing specialist training in this area.

Soft drinks are available around the clock, and hydration is taken seriously as part of overall nutritional care - particularly important for elderly residents, for whom dehydration can have serious health consequences.
Never Just a Meal
At every Ashberry home, we recognise that dining is one of the most significant parts of a resident's day. It's a time for connection, for comfort, for anticipation - and for the simple pleasure of something delicious. Our kitchen teams don't just cook; they contribute to the wellbeing and happiness of the people they serve.
Whether it's the smell of a freshly baked cake drifting through the corridor, the sight of vegetables grown locally just miles away, or a resident's eyes lighting up when they see their favourite dish on the menu - these are the moments that remind us why getting food right matters so much.
Across all nine of our homes, that commitment remains constant: every meal, made with care.
