Baking, Cooking & Wellbeing: How Food Brings Comfort, Confidence and Community

At Ashberry, we understand that wellbeing is about more than care - it’s about creating experiences that bring joy, connection and purpose. One of the most meaningful ways we do this across our care homes is through our much‑loved baking and cooking activities.

Whether it’s kneading dough, stirring cake batter or simply enjoying the aroma of something delicious coming from the oven, food-based activities encourage creativity, independence and social interaction for residents of all abilities.

The Wellbeing Benefits of Baking in Care Homes

Baking and cooking offer a powerful combination of sensory, emotional and social benefits - particularly for residents living with dementia or limited mobility. Across our Ashberry care homes, these activities support:

✔ Cognitive stimulation

Measuring ingredients, following steps and recognising familiar smells help keep the mind active.

✔ Emotional comfort

Food often sparks memories, encourages storytelling and offers a sense of accomplishment.

✔ Social connection

Preparing meals together brings residents and staff closer, creating a shared sense of community.

✔ Gentle physical activity

Stirring, chopping soft items and decorating cakes help maintain coordination and motor skills.

These activities are adaptable to all abilities, ensuring everyone can participate - whether mixing ingredients, choosing toppings or simply enjoying the tasting session at the end.

Engelberg residents celebrated National Homemade Bread Day with the comforting smell of warm, freshly baked bread. The bread was absolutely delicious and enjoyed by all!

Sushi‑Making Fun

The Weir Nursing Home

National Sandwich Day Fun

The Weir celebrated National Sandwich Day back in November in the most delicious way… by making our own tea‑time sandwiches! Residents chatted about the Earl of Sandwich - who, legend has it, invented the sandwich so he could keep playing cards without stopping for a meal. Quite the clever idea! Everyone chose their favourite fillings: Sheila enjoyed a classic ham and mayonnaise, Victor opted for a sweet jam sandwich, Malcolm kindly made Clare a ham sandwich, and Pat made sure to cut off her crusts! A simple, nostalgic activity that brought plenty of smiles.

National Chocolate Day Treats

For National Chocolate Day, residents enjoyed a wonderfully sweet celebration. They were offered a selection of delicious chocolates and had great fun dipping digestives into warm, melted chocolate - creating their own tasty treats and enjoying every moment of the chocolatey fun!
