At Engelberg Care Home, we had the honour of granting a truly special Ashberry Wish for one of our much-loved residents, Doreen, as she celebrated her remarkable 99th birthday.
The Ashberry Wishing Tree initiative is all about giving residents a heartfelt way to share their dreams, hopes, and personal wishes, no matter how big or small. For Doreen, her wish was simple but deeply meaningful: to spend her milestone birthday surrounded by her family in Gloucester.
Thanks to the support of Home Manager Dan Cash and Wellbeing Lead Karyn, that wish became reality. On the morning of her big day, the trio set off from Wolverhampton, stopping along the way to refresh, enjoy a snack, and take in the summer sunshine before continuing their journey.
When they arrived, Doreen was welcomed by the warm smiles of her loved ones, a blooming garden, and a party lovingly organised by her daughter Jane. The atmosphere was filled with laughter, hugs, and happy chatter as family members caught up and shared stories.
The celebrations began with drinks and a sizzling BBQ, followed by an impressive spread of cakes, pies, and crumbles. For the guest of honour, a beautifully decorated cake was presented.
During the afternoon, Jane- Doreen's daughter, gave a touching speech, paying tribute to her mother and the care she receives at Engelberg:
“Dan and Karyn and all of the staff at Engelberg love and care for Doreen as if she were their own. Their kindness, their patience, and their understanding of her needs are never-ending. Karyn arranges fabulous activities for Doreen and her friends- keeping their minds active, encouraging stories to be shared, and helping them solve puzzles together. Company and friendship are just the best things, and that’s what Mum enjoys every day in bucket loads at Engelberg. So, I think we should all raise a glass to this remarkable lady for reaching this milestone- and wish many happy returns to Doreen.”
Doreen was beaming from start to finish, her joy clear for all to see. Reflecting on the day, Karyn, wellbeing lead shared:
“It was such a joy to see Doreen surrounded by her family. She was glowing. These moments are what the Wishing Tree is all about- bringing happiness, connection, and fulfilment to the people we care for every day.”
Dan, Engelberg manager echoed her words:
“We always say our residents are like family, so it meant the world to be able to help Doreen spend such a milestone birthday with hers.”
Doreen has always been a cherished member of the Engelberg family. With her sense of humour, cheerful spirit, and eagerness to join in activities- from quizzes to flower arranging- she brings warmth and laughter to everyone around her.
