Broomy Hill Goes the Distance for Herefordshire Mind

Broomy Hill Nursing Home has proudly named Herefordshire Mind as its Charity of the Year, as part of a wider initiative from Ashberry Healthcare - and the response from everyone connected to the home has been remarkable.

Mental health sits at the heart of everything a good care home does, so when the team at Broomy Hill were choosing a charity to champion this year, Herefordshire Mind felt like a natural fit. What followed was a week of activity, determination and genuine community spirit that the whole home can be proud of.

As part of the "Move for Mental Health" cycling challenge, 15 participants came together - staff, residents, family members and friends - and between them pedalled an extraordinary 123.3 miles. The energy throughout was infectious, with Lauren leading the way on 26.2 miles, closely followed by Gemma on 21.1 miles and Ndidi on 12.9 miles. A particularly memorable moment came from Val, the wife of one of the home's residents, who joined in the challenge and embodied everything the week was about - a reminder that the community around a care home is just as vital as the one within it.

The following Friday brought a change of pace but no loss of enthusiasm. Six participants set off on a walking challenge, covering 14.2 miles between 10am and 5pm. Miles ticked by, conversation flowed, and with every step the team raised both funds and awareness for a cause close to many hearts.

Wellbeing Lead, Lauren Gatou, said:

"It was fantastic to see everyone come together for such an important cause. Every mile made a difference, and we are incredibly proud of the effort and community spirit shown throughout the week."

It's exactly that kind of warmth and purpose that makes Broomy Hill more than just a nursing home. From residents and their loved ones to staff going above and beyond, weeks like this one speak volumes about the culture the team has built.

The charity itself is no stranger to the difference community-driven support can make. Herefordshire Mind has been a lifeline for people across the county since 1978, delivering residential and community-based mental health services to adults navigating some of life's most difficult moments. Their work is rooted in a simple but powerful conviction: nobody should face a mental health challenge without support. With services under growing pressure nationwide, locally raised funds matter more than ever.

Donations are still being accepted, and every contribution goes directly towards supporting people in Herefordshire. To donate, visit the team's JustGiving page: Donate here

This partnership is part of a wider Ashberry Healthcare initiative to build meaningful, year-long relationships with local charities across all of our homes.
