A Remarkable Century: David Marks His 100-Year Milestone

A remarkable life spanning a full century was gently acknowledged in Llanybydder as David Thomas Hicks reached his 100-year milestone, surrounded by those closest to him.

The occasion was celebrated at Allt Y Mynydd Nursing Home, where five members of his family, his three daughters, son-in-law and granddaughter, spent a quiet afternoon together. In keeping with David’s wishes and his faith, the gathering was simple, intimate and centred on time with family rather than a large celebration.

Although the afternoon itself was private, the wider community shared their warm regards. Pupils from Ysgol Gynradd Llanybydder thoughtfully created handmade cards and sent a photograph of the whole school to acknowledge the milestone, a gesture that was deeply appreciated by David and his family.

Born in Pontypridd in 1926, David moved to Aberarth as a young child. After marrying, he settled in Fishguard where he worked as a dental technician, later returning to Aberarth upon retirement. His dedication to his craft led to a memorable claim to fame: he once repaired a crown for the renowned Welsh singer Iris Williams. To mark his 60th wedding anniversary, Iris Williams sent David and his late wife a signed photograph, which he still keeps safely in his bedroom at the home.

Throughout his life, David has found joy in simple pleasures. He enjoyed walking, gardening and growing his own fruit and vegetables. For many years he kept chickens and ducks and took pride in making homemade elderflower wine and champagne. He loved driving, though never venturing too far, as he always needed to return to feed his chickens.

Family outings often meant a bag of chips and an ice cream in Aberaeron with his son-in-law. He also followed football with interest and once took his eldest daughter to watch local matches. Music remains close to his heart; at Allt Y Mynydd he can often be heard walking the corridor singing traditional Welsh songs, his voice bringing warmth to those around him.

David has three daughters, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He has lived at Allt Y Mynydd for three and a half years and is a much-valued member of the home’s community.

The afternoon was relaxed and reflective. Tea was served in cups and saucers, with David reportedly enjoying around ten cups over the course of the visit, and the time was spent sharing memories and conversation. It was a fitting way to acknowledge a century of life: peacefully, surrounded by family.

Jess Bridgewater, Home Manager at Allt Y Mynydd Nursing Home, said:
“It was a privilege to support David and his family in marking such a significant milestone in a way that felt right for them. The afternoon was calm, full of warmth and togetherness, and very special to witness.”
Charlotte, Wellbeing Lead, added:
“David brings such a gentle presence to our home, especially when he’s singing along the corridors. Being able to create a peaceful space for him and his family to share that time together meant a great deal to us.”

At Ashberry Healthcare, we believe every life story deserves to be honoured in a way that reflects the individual. It was an honour to share this meaningful milestone with David and his family.
