Generations Unite as Meadowview Celebrates VE Day and Honours Local Veteran Mildred

At Meadowview Care Home in Penketh, we marked VE Day with a truly special day full of joy, community spirit, and touching moments that brought generations together.

Our residents started the day with a visit to Penketh South Primary School, where the children put on a fantastic performance of singing and dancing, prepared especially for us. It was such a treat to see the smiles on everyone’s faces as residents and children shared laughter and fun together in the school playground afterwards — a beautiful reminder of the simple joy of connection.

Back at Meadowview, the home was filled with the sounds of music and laughter as our VE Day party got underway. Residents enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea with handmade cakes from our kitchen team and lots of other treats. The home was decorated with colourful paper chains, thanks to the help of the wonderful children from Minnie Vinnies, who joined us later in the day for a craft session and a heart-warming singalong.

One of the most special moments came as we celebrated our very own resident, 99 year old Mildred, who holds a Veterans Badge awarded by the Mayor of Warrington in recognition of her service. Mildred's daughter kindly brought in her demob papers from the ATS, along with two beautiful photos of Mildred and her husband in their uniforms — a proud and poignant part of our day. The Minnie Vinnies children were so excited to meet Mildred and personally thank her for her service. It was a lovely, emotional moment as Mildred smiled and thanked them in return, reminding them to "be good for their parents."

Speaking about the day, Tracy, Wellbeing Lead at Meadowview said:
“While honouring the heroes of VE Day, our celebration was also about bringing people together, young and old, to share in friendship and fun, and to help teach the younger generation about the importance of remembering this day and the sacrifices that were made. We’re so grateful to everyone who helped make the day truly special — from the children and staff at Penketh South Primary School to our amazing residents and team here at Meadowview.”

It was a day filled with smiles, stories, and moments we’ll treasure for a long time to come.
